Capital FM’s “The Next Big Radio Presenter” finale held at Makerere University on Saturday night did not go down without controversy. The heavily attended event attracted artistes from all walks of life including Pallaso, Irene Ntale, Maro, Fille, and others.
However, the highlight of the night was during Bebe Cool’s performance when some Makerere University students pocketed their intellectual facade and sank to an all-time low as they outdid themselves for a paltry UGX 100k that the artiste was dishing out.
It all started when many of the students shouted at Bebe Cool to get off stage after he had made reference to the Tubonga Nawe project. In a bid to calm them down, he went into a lecture on why it’s good to tolerate divergent opinions. He invited two male students to join him on stage, including one that he said had been the most vocal in shouting at him to leave. The mood instantly changed after Bebe Cool called out to one of his minders and asked him to give one of the students UGX 100, 000/=.
At this point, the other student who had shouted Bebe offstage instantly changed his tone and started singing the artiste’s praises. Other students then joined in as each clamored for Bebe’s attention. It is during this debacle that one of the students lowered himself and started cleaning Bebe’s shoes so he could get his hands on the crisp notes.
Unfortunately for him, luck had not followed him in his shoe-cleaning exploits. He left empty handed. When Campusbee sought for the opinion of some of the students gathered about what had happened, some saw no problem with it while others expressed disgust.
Tina who had travelled all the way from Kare hostel in Kikoni was of the opinion that students are currently broke and desperate for which reason they shouldn’t be blamed for the behaviour they exhibited. Her friend Jemimah was of a similar opinion. Chris from Livingstone hall expressed similar sentiments, saying the students were right to do what they did “to get back some of our money that was misused to pay Bebe Cool and other artistes for the Tubonga Nawe project”.
Ritah, a resident of Africa hall was not in the least impressed. “Seriously, if it had been my boyfriend to make a fool of himself like that begging for money infront of his fellow students, I would dump him! What happened to self-respect?”
Derrick, a 3rd year student expressed disdain towards the entire saga.”Is this the intellectualism we talk about here? How can a student stoop so low to that extent for a paltry 100k?”
The money fiasco aside, Bebe Cool put up one hell of a performance!
