It goes without saying that Makerere has the highest concentration of violence per square metre. Strikes at Makerere university are often littered with all sort of violence, stone hurling, vandalism and verbal violence. Not even the guild president is spared of slaps when the mobs of Makerere deem it fit.
Male halls inside Makerere university are like mini rebel camps, first years are initiated into the culture of the hall, defending the hall and winning in all spheres against other halls by hook or crook. Halls like Lumumba and Mitchell have rebel-Like pacts, The GGB, Gongom guard brigade, and Rat Guard Brigade respectively, that engage in battles, morale boosting during games and organisation of hall events including porridge nights.
Last night, Africa hall and Livingston hall organised the popular Afrostone porridge night, porridge nights are social engagements that entail preparing porridge in the open quadrangle, playing loud music and dancing to the beats. It is a culture that is a night event. Well, often only members residing in the two halls are welcome to the porridge nights, the hosting hall must provide cups to the guests, who randomly knock on doors, introduce themselves and borrow cups as a way of keeping the solidarity.
On the weekend after the el nino rains, the Afrostone society organised its porridge night, all was well. The Culture minister of Livingston, Steven Kitenda Jessy, was at the fore front of the organisation. All was well, till a pack of nearly naked boys chanting the most vulgar songs raided the porridge party, at around 11:30 pm making demands that the Afrostone society abandons the party and switch off the music.
The pack was easily identified as boys from Nkrumah who apparently are neighbours to Nsibirwa, a male hall. The Nkrumah boys claimed that historically, Africa girls belong to Nkrumah not Livingston. They wanted all Livingston boys to leave the girls, the porridge and the music to them.
Tempers flared, within minutes, a scuffle broke out. The Livingston stone culture minister asked the Nkrumah boys who appeared to have taken in generous amounts of tot pack contents to leave… they wouldn’t. The scuffle got nasty, blows were thrown and punches exchanged. The raiding party was easily overpowered and pushed out, they ran out threatening to attack Livingston hall instead.
They however found resistance too and ended up going for the trademark midnight dip at the swimming pool. It is to be noted that Halls always endeavour to disrupt other halls’ events. Last year, during the Culture week, property was destroyed at Africa by the night raids orchestrated by Nkrumah boys. Livingstone residents, famed for being gentleman organised an abrupt kimeeza, to discuss ways of forming a squad too, the Livingston Guard Brigade.
