A long time ago, when the first land upon which Makerere University sits was donated by the kingdom. Tissue was unheard of instead, avocado and mango leaves were close companions after making” calls of nature. ” 90 years into the future, Makerere University students still see no reason as to why they should use toilet tissue.
It’s not in question that toilet paper is one of the least marketable items around Kikoni and it’s nearly unheard of around kikumi kikumi. In fact, toilet paper and religious books have the same rate at which they are bought. These are staggering facts.
However, there’s a rather high encouraging trend catching up around the Ivory Tower, either Muk students prefer reading old newspapers or they are compiling small personal newspapers archives .What then can satisfactorily explain the sudden surge in past newspaper sales upwards.
One of the newspaper vendors within the university, reliably informed scoops that for a meagreness 500shs (bitano ) one can get a 2013, 42 paged newspaper for non official purposes. He also noted that Monitor and Redpepper news prints are the most bought. Could it be for the soft flexible material? That only the users can testify.
The economics faculty must be doing a great job, because it makes more financial sense to buy News tissue than the a bit expensive yet little roll of toilet paper. We are not exactly saying that university students use old Newspapers inside toilets but again we can’t seem to explain the circumstances under which old newspapers were found inside the main library Loos.
We are refusing to believe, Makerere students use News tissue but we have no satisfactory answer to why sizeable newspaper cuttings were found inside a gentle looking MUK student’s room in absence of toilet tissue. We also don’t understand why dust lies accumulated on toilet paper in most of the hall canteens.
We don’t want to think that MUK students aren’t exactly civilised, but that other voice says otherwise. We on that note implore the Ministry of health to offer not just free condoms but also free toilet paper and free health lessons, on how fragile some areas are and how continued refusal to buy and use toilet paper is bad for the economy.
