President Museveni has ordered the take-over of two private universities, Mountains of the Moon University and Busoga University.
In a letter dated 8th January the president directed the line minister of Education, Hon. Janet K. Museveni to assume administration of these institutions citing that the two “did not realize what it means to run universities”.
“It is important that we come to the rescue of the students and the localities where these universities are,” read the letter in part. “I think they take much more to run than the secondary schools”.
In a story run by a local daily last year, it was reported that the Mountains of the Moon University appealed to the government to make the university a public institution. The administration of the university will surely be pleased by this new move. It is not yet certain whether Busoga University is comfortable with the change of events.
Other public universities to be constructed.
Due to the growing demand for university education, a number of universities are cropping up, some not providing the minimum threshold level of education. The government in the letter has a plan in play to establish more public universities in a number of zones in Uganda.
There are up to 18 zones that the government intends to use.
“The Zones I like to use in planning are the old colonial Districts…” says the president. He goes on to list these zones to include West Nile, Acholi, Madi, Lango, Teso, Karamoja, Sebei, Bagisu, Bukedi, Busoga, Mengo, Masaka, Mubende, Bunyoro, Tooro-Rwenzori, Ankole, Kigyezi and Kampala.
Already the project is being realized because some of these zones like Kampala, Masaka have established universities, Makerere University and Nkozi University. Teso too has the recently opened a university in Soroti district.
