Last week on Friday 6th March, the Ugandan government finally sent money to the 105 students in Wuhan, China to cater for their upkeep while still there.
The money that was sent was $600,000 which is approximately Shs 2.2bn through the Ugandan embassy in China. These 105 students compose of 65 students on government sponsorship and 40 other students who are on private sponsorship.
Earlier yesterday, the Ministry of Finance through its Permanent Secretary, Keith Muhakanizi recalled the transaction that was done and requested the Embassy to revert the money that was sent in excess of billions.
According to a statement from the minister of health, Dr Ruth Jane Aceng that was presented to parliament earlier on, it showed that these students needed $61,800 which is about Shs 228m.
The Ministry has therefore requested for a refund of $538,200 in a letter addressed to Mr Phillip Kanyoonzi, the principal secretary at the Ugandan embassy in Beijing.
Some students and people from the public still think that this amount of money was intended by those who want to swindle government money and one of the students went ahead to disclose that the number of students provided by the Ministry of Education (105) was not true claiming that the actual number of students in Wuhan is 82.
The money is yet to be placed onto the students’ accounts.
