Government of Uganda, through the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development has entered into a strategic partnership with an Argentine nuclear firm, marked by the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU).
This collaboration focuses on the establishment of a Centre for Nuclear Science and Technology at Soroti University, one of the public universities in Uganda.
The partnership will spearhead site evaluation and the development of designs for the Centre, which is set to host a nuclear research reactor for educational and training purposes.
This project aligns with Uganda’s broader Energy Policy of 2023, which aims to generate 52,481 MW of power to meet future demand, with nuclear energy expected to contribute a significant 24,000 MW.
The development of the Centre at Soroti University is a crucial step in Uganda’s efforts to harness nuclear power for energy security, as emphasized by Irene Batebe, the Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Energy.
Soroti University, located in the Eastern Region of Uganda, is one of the newer public universities in the country, established to expand access to higher education and foster regional development.
It offers a range of academic programs with a focus on science and technology, making it an ideal location for this nuclear research initiative.
