Posh Makerere University hostel, Olympia is in the news again after releasing a communique asking resident students in final year to pay again as they’re entering their hostel rooms.
The Hostel, whose management communicated about a week ago that they wanted to carry out innovations in the rooms, turns out was just using the excuse to boot students out of their rooms and admit fresh ones.
In a letter addressed to the students’ community that Campus Bee has received, the management, in what appears to be broad day robbery and exploitation, has set up fresh charges for all rooms in the hostel even for students that had already finished paying up for the semester that ended pre-maturely in March.
The students had cleared all their hostel dues to zero before President Museveni ordered for the closure of all schools and higher institutions of learning to curtail the spread of the novel coronavirus.
“I am very sad that this is happening even after the Minister of Education, Hon. Janet Museveni, expressly said that we should not be charged afresh when we resume. We have had our differences with the Olympia Management naye this time they have gone beyond.” A resident of the Hostel, name withheld, told Campus Bee.
Another student, a one Tumwine, who foots his own education bills says his business in Kikuubo was disrupted by the effects of COVID-19 and just when he is trying to recover from the losses made, he is facing more bills at his Hostel residence.
Our efforts to find out the official position of the university as regards Hostels like Olympia that are charging students afresh were futile as the university Public Relations Officer (PRO) Ms Ritah Namisango avoided to comment about the issue in a telephone interview.
