The Gulu Guild election had its ups and downs. On 22nd April 2018, the ballot papers were invalid and this resulted in postponement of the election to 29th April 2018. On the voting day chaos ensued and this led to cancellation of two polling stations for students of agriculture and the students from faculty of business that study on weekends.
The Guild presidential aspirant in recent concluded election Mr OJok Moses Onono together with Mr. Eric Bithum Opondo (also an Guild presidential aspirant), Ms. Laker lilly, Oloya Ivan, Onek Charles, have petitioned in the High Court-Gulu. They say that the election and whole election process was full irregularities and malpractice and as such, it led to their loss in the just concluded election.
“…the election was marred with gross irregularities and malpractice which affected the outcome of the election….”, reads section of the petition. They accuse the Gulu Guild Electoral commission of conducting an unfair election and announcing the fraudulent results.
Interim order issued
The High Court of Gulu has issued an interim order blocking all activities of electoral commission including swearing in of the new elected Guild President and members of the Guild representative council. “..an interim order doth issue restraining the respondents (Electoral commission and Gulu university) and their agents from swearing in the guild President and Guild representatives elect or from transacting any business……”, reads the order.
The guild representative council sat on 2nd April 2018 where they elected Hon Okello Edmond as Guild Speaker and Hon Otim Kennedy as the deputy Guild Speaker.
Today 3rd April 2018, the court will convene to listen to respondents and also determine that fate of the just concluded Gulu guild election
