Public Universities that include Gulu, Kyambogo, and Makerere University Business School (Mubs) have today morning joined Makerere University student leaders to call for the re-opening of the university.
This was during a press conference held at Dinners Cafe in Ham Towers just opposite the university main gate.
They were joined by the Uganda National Students’ Association (Unsa) – the umbrella organisation that unites students allover the country.
The Gulu University representative Robert Bukembo, who led the team, was citing a number of challenges that affect students which government has accorded a deaf ear. He requested President Museveni to listen to their problems without merely closing the institution or they demand closure of all public universities as a sign of solidarity.
“The gvernment’s move to request the medical students only to resume work is pathetic and we will support them in their solidarity not to resume work,” Bukembo said.
For his part, Roy Ssembogga the Guild President of Makerere said that since all guild presidents have unanimously agreed that the president should listen to them without fail.
“We request the president to listen to us the student leaders because all the problems that affect Makerere affect all public institutions. If he doesnt, the next closure may be at Kyambogo or Must [Mbarara University of Science and Technology],” Ssembogga said.
It is now two weeks since the University was closed and the last ultimatum issued by the Makerere Guild President was never taken serious by government. When he tried to march to Parliament, police detained him for a whole day.
