Gulu university temporarily halted business at the institution on the morning of 23rd November as the university turned into a battle field between students and police that tried to extinguish off a student’s strike.
Government sponsored students at Gulu university rose up in arms to challenge the criteria used to cut their allowances. Allowances for government sponsored students had been cut during the recent lockdown thus students getting less than the normal because they were not physically available on campus.
Due to the reduction in the allowances recently cashed out, government sponsored students are demanding for a top up hence the strike. Students argue that since they are physically back on campus, they should be given extra payments to compensate for what was earlier deducted.
However police quickly came in to silence the strike before it could go out of hand. Scores are reported to be arrested and in police custody and among these is the president of the Gulu university government sponsored students’ association.
