Armed to the teeth, Gulu University, faculty of agriculture students doing their recess term yesterday took to a peaceful demonstration to call upon the long lost attention of the university administration to come to their rescue.
The demonstration came about 5 weeks since the last official communication between these students and the university and the faculty administration. Led by the deputy prime minister Hon. Kitara Mugisha and the deputy minister for Information and Communication Technology, Hon Ocitti Andrew, the angry students marched to the university bursars, office seeking answers to questions that related to the operations of recess as is stipulated in the program outlines.
The major concerns raised included; delayed field trips especially the one to Nyabyeya forestry college that was due this week and supposed to involve a lot of practical and field operations and practices, cancellation of the recess games and the most pressing being the delayed delivery of bicycles that are meant to facilitate movement of students to village farmer groups where most of them have been attached as interns required to train, offer manual labour and do hands on trainings in areas such as poultry, piggery, bee keeping, rabbit rearing, fish farming, cattle rearing and practices and crop husbandry in general.
The situation came to calm after the university dean Mr Mpora intervened and promised to expedite the process through his office and requested the students to follow up with the faculty dean Dr. Elly Ndyomugenyi for positive feedback as soon as possible.
The students later dispersed after reaching a decisive conclusion to allow the student leaders involved make the follow ups.
