A 23-year-old student at Gulu University is fighting for his future after being forced to drop out of school twice due to a debilitating hip condition.
Otim Elijah Paul, a second-year Bachelor of Science in Computer Science student, has been battling chronic pain for two years after his hip joints began to degenerate. The illness has left him unable to sit upright or walk without severe pain, pushing him to suspend his studies.
Doctors have now recommended total hip replacement surgery to restore his mobility. While the operation itself will be carried out free of charge at Bombo Military Hospital, the implants and surgical equipment carry a hefty price tag of $5,800 (over UGX 20 million) — excluding hospital contingencies.
In a letter dated 21st September 2025, the university’s Guild President launched an urgent appeal to fellow students, faculty, and well-wishers under a fundraising drive dubbed “2K Campaign.”
The appeal, made on behalf of Elijah and his father Mr. Ambrose Okot, a lecturer at the Faculty of Education and Humanities, calls for both financial contributions and prayers.
“We extend our humble appeal for your generous support towards this very expensive surgery,” the letter reads. “We look forward to your donation! God bless you.”
The campaign highlights the struggle many Ugandan students face when struck by medical crises, with peers now rallying to ensure Elijah gets the life-changing surgery he desperately needs.
