United Nations Human Rights office in Gulu has on Monday, 19th June 2023 donated over 1000 law books to Gulu University Library following the looming closure of all United Nations Human Rights offices in Uganda, this, according to the university website,
Wafula Owor Emmanuel, the National Human Rights Officer team leader in Gulu said the books were part of their Resource Centre where the public and human rights scholars would do their reading from and felt that Gulu University could carry the mantle of serving the community even in their absence.
According to him, their offices would close officially on the 5th of August 2023 hence he signed a memorandum with Gulu University in May 2023 to allow them to deliver the books to Gulu University.
He added that they felt the Law books which includes domestic and international laws and reports on human rights from various region among others was relevant for Gulu University in supporting research and knowledge storage for human rights actors.
Prof. Openjuru George Ladaah, the Vice-Chancellor thanked the management of UN Human Rights for the gesture, promising that the University shall continue to ensure that people would continue to access the books from Gulu University Main Library Human Rights Section.
“The services you were offering continues. All these books are relevant to the Faculty of Law and Institute of Peace and Strategic Studies, and we would definitely put them to good use”. Prof. Openjuru observed.
Gulu University Vice-Chancellor was accompanied by Gulu University Deputy University Secretary, Obalim Christopher and Gulu University Acting Librarian, Dr Ongaya Kizito.
The donation includes 282 Law Books and 1,085 Human Rights and Law reports.
