Prof. David Okello Owiny, Deputy Vice Chancellor of Gulu University, has been elected Council Representative of all Public Universities in Uganda to National Council for Higher Education (NCHE).
Owiny emerged winner in a hotly contested race of 8 which took place on Tuesday September 17, 2024, from State House. The election was hosted at State House on invitation of Minister of Education and Sports, Mrs. Janet Museveni Kataaha.
Prof. Okello Owiny scooped 80 votes of the total 223 votes cast by the 10 public universities in attendance followed by Assoc. Prof. Joyce. M. Ayikoru of Muni University with 35 votes and Assoc. Prof. Sarah Sally from Makerere University came in 3 rd position with 33 votes.
While sharing his joy during a surprise belated birthday celebration organized by the university staff at Gulu University on Wednesday, 18 September 2024, Prof. Owiny pledged to address key issues including tackling delayed accreditation of courses submitted to NCHE by the different universities and opening regional offices for NCHE as he assumes office.
“When I decide to do something, I want to do it to the fullest. I don’t do things halfway, I have to run the full race up to the end” Prof. Owiny said.
The University Secretary, David Obol Otori and other staff members who attended the belated birthday celebration congratulated Prof. Owiny on his landslide victory over other candidates and wished him a fruitful term in office.
Other candidates Prof. Wilson Babu Musinguzi from Mountains of the Moon University got 18 votes, Rev. Canon Dr. John Musisi Ssenyonyi from Soroti University obtained 16 votes, Assoc. Prof. Jude Ssempebwa of Makerere University, 15 votes, Dr. Martha. K. Twinamatsiko from Muni University with 13 votes, and the Busitema University Assoc. Prof. Kani Olema David got 12 votes.
