Gulu University lecturers have under their body GUASA, resolved not to administer exams until their demands are met. The lecturers claim they cannot work without pay. “We were supposed to have began our end of semester exams today but lecturers refused to release papers because they haven’t yet been paid. This means the papers that were to be done today will be done after all papers are done and that’s on 3rd of June.” Julie Ayo, a student at the university told this reporter.
The guild president, Andrew Otto Ogwetta however, came out to issue a statement to the students’ body, it read;
“TO: THE GENERAL STUDENTS
EXAMS
We apologize for the inconvenience that has resulted from the failure of the negotiations between GUASA and the University Management that caused the delay in exams.
Considering the above issue, we proposed the following which were agreed and considered by committee of Deans and Admin that sat this morning.
1. From next semester 2014 a student who has fully cleared Tuition, Guild fee and General Charges shall be immediately be given exams card and a registration card.
2. Meeting resolved also that the exams shall be pushed to begin tomorrow with the paper that should be done on Tuesday and all affected papers shall be shifted to a convenient day and time. Faculties likely to be affected like Education shall have their school of practice contacted by Administration regarding the inconvenience.
3. Students missing the white card will be allowed to sit their first exams as the accounts departments reorganize itself to check clearance issues.
4. The university shall find a means convenient and fast enough to address this issue.
Let’s humbly adjust and be strong at this trying moment even if we are not any type of grass which must suffer when two elephants fight.
Thanks
Yours in Excellency,
H.E.Andrew Ogwetta Otto
Guild President.”
