As various universities elect their new guild governments, Kabale University voted Evelyn Natukunda on Saturday as the university’s 17th guild president. Natukunda who defeated her other four competitors becomes the 2nd female Guild President of the 18-year-old university, after Christine Barigye who served during 2016/17 term.
Natukunda, a second year Bachelor of Science in Education (ICT and Geography) student, polled 563 votes, while her closest competitor, Abel Muruhura got 488 votes. Edison Matsiko came in third with 443 votes, followed by Samuel Musimenta with 87 votes and lastly Michael Junior Nuwagaba with 34 votes.
“I will make sure that I engage all the contestants I had in this race because they also have ideas I believe can help in uplifting Kabale University,” Natukunda said shortly after being declared winner.
According to Andrew Kankiriho, the EC Chairman, the polling exercise was generally peaceful, apart from a case of four people who allegedly came in with forged documents from outside education institutions to participate in the voting.
There was also a case where some of the students attacked and nearly harmed the university Dean of students, Charles Sendegeya, who they accused of protecting those involved in ballot stuffing. This later brought in chaos that compelled police to use gunfire to calm down the situation.
Anti-riot police was heavily deployed at the tally centre and other parts of the campus premises during vote counting.
