The chairman of Makerere University Academic Staff Association (Muasa), Dr Muhammad Kiggundu, has trashed the claim run by mainstream media that they have called off their strike.
During an exclusive interview with Campus Bee, Dr Kiggundu said as Muasa executive, they met with Makerere University council yesterday and agreed on some issues but the power to call off the strike remains with the general assembly that will convene tomorrow.
“We have to table the position [ from our meeting with university council] before the general assembly. [Calling off the strike] those are rumours. And you know that during war, it’s propaganda that is most breaking. But for us [as Muasa executive], our work is to table the position of council before the general assembly,”Dr Kiggundu explained.
Asked about what exactly took place during their meeting with the university council, Dr Kiggundu said thus;
“We reached a position that we are going to table before the general assembly, and the position is: that one month of the incentive and the November salary be paid immediately without condition,” Kiggundu told Campus Bee this morning.
“We were given a road map for the clearance of the rest of the months [for salary incentive arrears that had accumulated from February this year to October] minus the one month that is going to be paid immediately. The remaining unpaid months will be paid before the end of this financial year, that is between February and June.”
