Over the weekend, social media was stunned over gossip of a Makerere University student who ran to police to seek ‘safety’ when he received love texts, purportedly from a colleague of the same gender.
The Makerere student who is said to be the victim has been identified as Lawrence Karungi, a third year student of Bachelor of Commerce course who ran to police in Mukono to report the matter.
It is alleged that upon Karungi’s visit to one of the hostels where he had gone to meet a friend, he met the suspect with whom they exchanged contacts on a normal friendly basis.
To his shock, a day later, Karungi says he started receiving love messages from the suspect who is of the same gender.
However, the suspect’s identity has not been disclosed.
“He was sending me weird messages, including pictures of gay people. Also, telling me that he can give me money. I wasn’t interested and I told him to stop. He persisted sending messages and I had to take a serious step,” Karungi told police.
Karungi notes that the occurrence left him in some kind of paranoia, a reason he broke his silence about it.
Police has since confirmed the report.
“We are yet to summon the suspect to record his statement. We are going to submit the messages and the suspect’s phone to our ICT experts for analysis,” Kampala Police spokesperson, Patrick Onyango told Daily Monitor – a native publication.
The University’s (Makerere) Chief of Gender Mainstreaming Directorate revealed to a local publication that he has ever heard and received a similar complaint, verbal in nature, but the matter had not been deeply investigated because the complainant remained anonymous.
