The body of Mutalabani Ssemugoma, a 16-year-old senior two student of Nyenga Senior Secondary School, in Njeru Municipality, Buikwe District, has been found hanging in his bedroom after he allegedly committed suicide over schools fees.
According to Isa Kabere, the brother of the deceased, Ssemugoma was given an unspecified amount of money to pay school fees but he did not reach school. Apparently, Ssemugoma returned from the Casino on Saturday.
“My brother was given an unspecified amount of fees by our mother but he did not reach school on that day. He returned on Saturday. When I asked him where he was on Friday, he told me that he was at the casino,” Kabere said.
Kabere was instructed by their parents who had travelled to Iganga District to punish the deceased with three strokes of the cane, which he did.
The tearful Kabere added that his brother told his colleagues that he was going to kill himself, but none of them took him seriously.
“However, at around 6pm on Sunday, the deceased reportedly bid his friends ‘farewell’ as they played football, saying he was going to kill himself but he was not taken seriously. They thought he was hurrying to take some water since they had been playing for the day but he instead locked himself in the bedroom and hanged himself with a cloth,” Kabere added.
