Police are investigating the circumstances under which a 64-year-old university lecturer, who taught at Makerere University Business School (MUBS) and Victoria University, was found dead in his bed at his residence in Kampala.
Detectives attached to Kira Road Division Police Station launched investigations after the decomposing body of Dr. Tom Mugizi was discovered in his house, days after he was last seen alive.
According to Kampala Metropolitan Police deputy spokesperson ASP Luke Owoyesigyire, the death was reported on January 3, 2026, by the deceased’s sister, Ms Annet Runtemu Nsasiirwe. She became concerned after repeated attempts to reach her brother by phone from December 31, 2025, were unsuccessful.
Growing increasingly worried, Ms Nsasiirwe asked a neighbour to check on Dr. Mugizi. Upon entering the house, the neighbour found him lying dead in his bed in an advanced state of decomposition.
“A neighbour was requested to check on him and found the deceased lying dead in his bed in a decomposing state. The house was found open and there was no indication that any property had been stolen,” ASP Owoyesigyire said.
Police officers later visited the scene, documented it, and recorded statements from relevant witnesses. The body was then conveyed to Mulago City Mortuary, where a postmortem examination is expected to establish the exact cause of death.
Preliminary police findings indicate that Dr. Mugizi had a history of chronic illness, although authorities caution that it is too early to conclusively determine what caused his death. Investigations are ongoing as detectives await the autopsy report to guide further action.
The death has sent shockwaves through the academic community, particularly at Victoria University and MUBS, where Dr. Mugizi was widely respected for his dedication to teaching and mentorship.
In a statement posted on its official X (formerly Twitter) account, Victoria University described Dr. Mugizi as an esteemed and committed lecturer whose impact would be long remembered.
“His wisdom, humility, and commitment to shaping minds will never be forgotten. Our heartfelt condolences go out to his family, friends, colleagues, and students during this difficult time,” the university said.
As police continue to piece together the lecturer’s final days, colleagues and students are mourning the loss of an academic whose influence extended far beyond the classroom.
