Permit me to remind you of the fateful events of 2016 where two Law students namely; Simon Semuwemba who was the UCU Law Society President then and Yasin Ssentumbwe were expelled by the administration of the Mukono- based institution for allegedly demonstrating against a 12.5% tuition increment and other fees which in their strong opinion was an unfair policy to both student and parents pockets. Well, to cut the story short, these two individuals successfully sued the institution as Lady Justice of the High Court Margaret Mutonyi faulted the University’s code of conduct and ordered for their reinstatement as students in addition to payment of costs and damages of the suit.
Fast forward, one of the formerly expelled students Mr. Yasin Ssentumbwe currently studying in the same University as a 3rd year Law Society has taken Youth Empowerment to a whole new level. Mr. Yasin in an interview, informed the Bee of how he recently in conjunction with a few other colleagues registered and launched “Gain Confidence Africa”, an N.G.O that was purposely created to empower youth in various schools economically, morally, leadership-wise and further empower the girl-child through curbing the high rates of teenage pregnancy and early marriages.
Mr. Yasin Ssentumbwe & his team are seen in the pictures attached to this article equipping the students with various skills like making exercise books and various snacks whose process of manufacturing is simple and cheap but give unimaginable levels of profits which he further trains the students on how to save and re-invest.
He further expressed his concern about the overwhelming levels of drug abuse that he feels have hindered progress amongst the youth both academically, socially and economically. When asked where their offices are located, he categorically informed us that they are situated in Mukono via Greenly Apartment.
He expressed his concern about the negative attitude they as an N.G.O face from Administrators of schools, unfair government policies, financial and time constraints and limited skilled human resources. We wish him good luck in this new journey of generosity.
