The annual NSSF Career Expo 2018 kicked off on Tuesday March 6th, at the Makerere University Business School where hundreds of students braved the morning drizzle to make their way to the school’s ADB Building to get equipped with real life career skills.
The event started at 10:00am with NSSF’s Managing Director Richard Byarugaba being the first speaker followed by Daily Monitor Managing Director, Tonny and MUBS Deputy principle, Professor Moses Muhwezi in the morning session.
Mr. Richard Byarugaba advised students to work on equipping themselves with skills that are needed in the work place rather than vying for first class degrees which are becoming basic as everyone has one.
“While at school, you have lecture notes which you can read and reproduce in exams and pass. In life, no one gives you a manual. No one gives you marks. What will make you stand out is a skill which you can only get in an Expo like this.” – He said.
Professor Moses Muhwezi talked more on self branding and getting a way of distinguishing oneself from the crowd before praising the students for being known as the most peaceful across the region.
“At MUBS, You don’t hear about issues of strikes. That will pay off one time.” He said.
The students went for a lunch break and Tjabbe Bos from Bare Footlaw commenced the afternoon session’s speeches. He cautioned the students about cyber crimes giving a number of examples and advised them to report such cases to the police.
NSSF’s Head of Business, Mr. Geoffrey Waiswa and Mr. Vicent Seruma from the office of Communications, Cooperate Affairs, Uganda Revenue Authority summed up the day with speeches about standing out of the many graduates that join the labour market each year.
These gave tips to students on how they can brand themselves in a unique way to compete favourably in the labour market.
Mr. Vicent Seruma mentioned making good choices, being reliable and socially stable as one of the ways one can brand themselves.
Students were given a chance to ask the speakers a number of questions and these were responded to on the spot. The organisers thanked students for attending in large numbers before asking them to come back today, 7th March 2018 where speakers from NTV Uganda, Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) are expected to share their experiences before the expo is taken to another University.
