Lack of orderliness at Kyambogo University’s second 2020 guild presidential debate saw Nile Broadcasting Services (NBS) Television news anchor Samson Kasumba leave in protest.
This debate was prepared by the Electoral Commision (EC) of the university as one of the avenues of preparing guild presidential aspirants for the forth coming elections. Being one of the avenues of determining the intellectual ability of the candidates, a formal atmosphere was expected to be highly prioritized.
This was however not the case. The debate that was scheduled to start at exactly 2:00pm commenced at around 4:00pm. This was mainly because most of the candidates arrived late without any apologies or warning from the candidates and the EC respectively.
To add on the late coming. Supporters became so rowdy even before the debate started. Scores of scuffles erupted from different camps as the moderators waited for the rains to cease.
Kasumba stood to give remarks where he revealed that he was once a student of Kyambogo way back in 1991 before it was even a university. He however hinted on the misbehavior that he did not expect from students studying in the second largest university in Uganda.
“We can not fail to respect time when we are regarding ourselves as the people to teach those in villages. The world is at the moment where time is highly respected. This is the time where we should be formal enough not what I’m seeing.” He said.
He further went ahead to declare how he was not able to moderator such a debate and asked to walk away in protest.
The debate however went on with the president and vice of Kyambogo’s debating club taking on as the moderators.
Kyambogo University is in the last phase of its 2020 guild election road map. With the second debate all done, the last debate is scheduled on Saturday 7th March and the elections will be conducted on Tuesday 10th March.
