While government is trying to un-do all the weevils in its system, Prof. George Openjuru the new Vice Chancellor of Gulu University is not seated still, he too is on the run to uncover all the weevil-like character in the institution. Of recent, the University has often times been referred to as a primary school by not only students but a few government organs as well. However, despite all these criticisms there was hardly any change.
In a general assembly called by Rt. Hon. Mugerwa Hebert the Guild speaker, many issues were addressed to the new Vice chancellor. Most of these problems had earlier on been discussed and way forward given but hardly implemented. The problems included; the poor drainage system, “when it rains, the university gets flooded and there is hardly any place to pass” said Mugerwa, poor medical services, limited lecture space, and several others.
While addressing these concerns, the professor had this to say, “I have been here for three years and I hardly knew about this mess. Usually when I move around to supervise lecturers don’t allow me to reach all corners and I as well seat comfortably knowing everything is alright. It is only one time when I accidentally found computer students attending lessons under a tree, I didn’t know about this. Of recent I found students attending lectures under a car park and the lecturer told me that it was a tent. However now that am in office am going to try my level best to address all these issues. I will sleep in Mhakanizi’s office to see to it that we get some change.”
In his last remarks, he thanked the incumbent guild president Pastor Joseph Okidi for not being a primitive president. The fact that he was able to keep calm despite the challenges faced was a distinction. He further called upon all aspiring Guild presidents to avoid making noise and incite violence but rather work in silence and co-operation with the University’s management.
