The Guild President Elect of Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU) – Main Campus Yusuf Welunga says he doesn’t belong to People Power because the laws of the university strictly disallow students politics to be attached to political parties.
Welunga reacts to the reports that he belongs to the political movement.
“Following an IUIU ACT, my mighty university, is a non partisan institution and there’s no way it can allow students’ politics based on political parties. It gives students a platform to vote for their leaders based on their merit and that’s the reason as to why Yusuf Welunga was voted basing on his merit. If you don’t stop from spreading such false information, I will take the next step.” He said.
Today, Independent Member of Parliament for the Mityana Municipality constituency, Zaake Francis Butebi congratulated him (Yusuf Welunga) and Fatuma Nakibuule for winning the 2020/2021 Islamic University in Uganda – Main campus Guild President and Lady Vice posts respectively on Saturday.

“Congratulations are in order for Mr. Welunga Yusuf and Ms. Nakibuule Fatumah upon being elected Guild President and Vice Guild President, respectively, at Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU),” reads the Facebook post.
After announcing the results ,Uganda Police fired bullets in the space to calm down the jubilating supporters of the Guild President and Lady Vice elect while singing People Power songs.
“It is true, during my declaration as a winner for the position of guild presidency, all IUIU students ran mad over such a long awaited victory, students were singing people power songs, slogans, etc some were putting on red berets actually some were putting on their red berets on my head but I was removing dodging them. Nonetheless, that one cannot make you associate Yusuf Welunga to the people power movement,” says the IUIU -Main campus Guild President elect.
