Denis Peter Ouma, a Makerere University fresh graduate has taken to his social media platforms to thank Makerere University for accepting to have him as a student after he was rejected by several universities because of his physical situation.
Ouma, who got a spinal cord injury during a road accident decided to go back to school despite the devastating effects of the nasty accident. Ouma was however rejected by several universities because he seats in a wheelchair, cannot move or write on his own.
“Many universities rejected me seemingly for the right reasons such as, you can’t write your own tests or exams, you can not wheel yourself around campus or even access the lecture room on storied buildings! The defiance in me even threatened to sue these universities for failing to grant me an inclusive education environment as enshrined in the supreme law of the land.” Ouma’s post reads in part.
“Fate would lead me to Makerere University where in the first office I sat lay a beautifully framed quote reading ” We are the icons of innovative learning in Africa” and that is when I knew my challenge had found a home.” The post reads further.
With the intervention of the University Board, Ouma was able to secure admission at Makerere University. During his exams, Ouma required a private room, two vetted writing assistants, a full-time invigilator and a voice recorder.
“In case you are wondering,I needed the use of a private room, two vetted writing assistants, a full-time invigilator and a voice recorder during my tests and exams. The voice recorder could also be given to the examiner to compare with my answer sheets just to make sure the writing assistants did not write any answers that I did not dictate.” Ouma wrote.
The excited Ouma also graduated last week during Makerere University’s 71st graduation ceremony that saw him and others secure degrees and diplomas in their respective qualifications.
“Every single person that laid a brick to this success story, from friends, family teaching and non teaching staff, students community, etc only God can reward you.” Ouma concluded.
