The Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Uganda (ICPAU) released the results of its December 2024 examinations on Monday, January 6, 2025, during an event held at Protea Hotel Kampala Skyz. The announcement marked the conclusion of the final exam diet of 2024, with over 6,795 candidates attempting the exams across seven centers nationwide.
Despite an increase in candidate numbers compared to May 2024, the overall performance showed mixed results. A total of 6,555 candidates sat for the Certified Public Accountants of Uganda (CPA-U) exams, the institute’s flagship course, with a pass rate of 35.6%, slightly lower than the 43.7% recorded in the previous diet.
The Accounting Technicians Diploma (ATD) saw a pass rate of 51%, while the Certified Tax Advisor (CTA) exams recorded 48.5%, both showing slight declines from May 2024. However, ICPAU President CPA Josephine Okui Ossiya, represented by Vice President CPA Ronald Mutumba, encouraged candidates to persist in their studies and utilize the institute’s support resources, including free webinars and study materials.
Several candidates excelled, achieving top marks in their respective subjects. Notable among them was Javis Birungi Atuhura, who emerged as the best student in the Integration of Knowledge paper for CPA-U, and Eria Mukasa Mwebe, who excelled in Principles of Taxation under the ATD program.
The CPA-U course recorded 111 new graduates, a significant increase from the 81 graduates in May 2024. The CTA program saw 12 graduates, while 15 candidates completed the ATD course.
The graduates were encouraged to seize professional opportunities, including the Practical Experience Training (PET) for CPA-U candidates and roles in tax advisory for CTA graduates. ATD graduates were advised to consider progressing to the CPA-U program.
Additionally, ICPAU emphasized the importance of staying updated on the examination calendar and upcoming events, including the annual graduation ceremony and masterclasses for specialized skills.
The institute announced several initiatives for 2025, including:
- Student Scholarship Program: The 6th edition beneficiaries will be unveiled on January 15, 2025, with entries for the 7th edition opening soon.
- Public Finance Management Conference for Africa: Scheduled for February 18–20, 2025, in partnership with the African Union and World Bank.
- Market-responsive Certifications: Expanding training in data analytics, personal financial planning, and business valuation.
CPA Prof. Laura Aseru Orobia, Chairperson of the Public Accountants Examinations Board (PAEB), commended candidates for their efforts and encouraged them to leverage ICPAU resources for continued success. “We are proud of the resilience demonstrated by all candidates and remain committed to supporting their professional growth,” she stated.
