A Hong Kong based fintech company Mobinet (a company with operations across Africa) will on the 9th February 2018 launch the inaugural Uganda Universities Debate Championship Competition that will take place at the Pearl of Africa Hotel.
Fintech is an abbreviation for Financial Technology and according to the statement is one of the world’s fastest growing investment areas, with over 500 innovation startups recorded from Africa alone, making it rank 3rd after Asia and Europe. Fintech is intended to augment “financial inclusion within developing economies with high levels of unbanked and under-banked citizens.”
The announcement was made through a press release on the 23 January 2018 where a partnership was made between Mobinet and Interswitch.
According to the statement, the organizers saw it ideal to have the event involve the vast student population and up to 250 students will be in attendance including various dignitaries from the corporate world and government. For the inaugural debate, only four universities Uganda Christian University, Makerere University, Kyambogo University and Makerere University Business School will take part.
The debate will be chaired by the chairperson of the Uganda Debate Society, Mr. Jacob Eyeru using the gold standard British Parliamentary Format of Debate under the theme “Harnessing youth voices for financial inclusions”.
The event is “a platform for young people to share their perspectives on some of the issues surrounding financial technology and its impact on the future of the Ugandan financial sector” reads the statement.
“It is vitally important to tap into the views of the next generation of users of this technology” says Andrew Otico, the CEO of Mobinet. He mentions that these users are going to be instrumental in shaping “the next wave of fintech and promoting greater financial inclusion for all.”
There will be various prices to be won that day including an all-expenses paid trip for only the top two teams to some of the world’s most desired destinations.
