Politics is a calculated plan of action that is usually meant for a few set of people. For one to take part, they need to plan ahead, be smart, committed and selfless.

Turinamukama Bayern Turinawe, a law student at UCU Mukono is one of those rare species that have politics in their DNA. The third year student says he was identified by his friends and inspired to join the guild as early as his second year, yet it’s presumed that law students should join guild in their third year. He defied the norms after going through an MP election for the constituency of residents. His comrades immediately identified him as the best candidate for speakership and as he has never rejected a call for leadership, he took it on immediately.

The 21 year old says he borrowed a leaf from his mother, Ingrid Turinaiwe and his belief in leadership of values and integrity than leadership of impunity and compromised ethics. He also discovered alot through reading though it started as a joke until he read political books like “From Third World to First” by Lee Kuan Yew. Since then, politics has profoundly become part of him and making a change has been his priority.

He knew that UCU was the perfect place to discover and practice politics. Bayern also did a practical course on psychology (dealing with many people), which has helped him academically since he is always reminded that he has people to inspire towards his direction.

With his position, he has met amazing people, from different political dimensions and has used it as an opportunity of networking. He pays off bills, manages his finances and has also started off a business where he has employed a number of people who really needed jobs. He further says his journey has just begun and he has one person to thank for that and that’s God because when you plan God out of your plans, you plan to fail.

The open minded leader says he has faced a few challenges among which is balancing academics with work which are all demanding. Often times he misses classes because he needs to serve students and before he knows it , there will be an administrative meeting which comes without considering his schedule and it’s a must attend.

Little appreciation is another challenge. Students will always critisize no matter how much good he does for them and most of all, serving people who don’t understand the law because he has great respect for the law, and legal dilemma leads him into a state of becoming a legal defender.

“These are things not many take serious, but strict adherence to the aw is the way to go in leadership.” He detests undermining the law, however small it is. He says there is no small rape and a big rape, all of them are rapes in equal measure.

To the all those with intentions of joining leadership at campus, the sky is the limit. You don’t need to wait till you get the qualifications, believe in your might and make a move, you never know just like him, you could win yourself a prestigious position.
