State Minister of Investment, Evelyn Anite’s government-funded scholarship in America has been surrounded by controversy following a demonstration held by Ugandans living in the United States of America who want her admission at Tufts University cancelled.
Anite is a student of International Relations and Diplomacy at the prestigious Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University, a private research University located in the state of Massachusetts. Through a scholarship that she acquired in January 2018, Anite’s studies are funded by the government of Uganda where she is paying USD 90,000 (342 million Shillings) for her course.
Following Anite’s request to take leave from parliament so that she can attend her classes, some Ugandans in the U.S came out last Sunday to question her admission saying that the United States, as a democratic country should not allow corrupt government officials to seek refuge in its territory under the guise of undertaking further studies.
The angry Ugandans challenged the admission as they demanded Tufts University to suspend Anite from studies and they went ahead to advise her to join Russian schools.
According to Martin Byakuleta the president of Common League of Ugandan Diaspora (CLOUD), if Tufts University fails to suspend Anite, they will organize a high-level demonstration in August.
Anite who also doubles as the Member of Parliament for Koboko Municipality graduated from Uganda Christian University with a Bachelor of Arts in Mass Communication in 2008. Anite also served as the State Minister for Youth and children before she became the Minister of Investment.
