As they met in a full house meeting at MAK main hall chaired by over 10 leaders of the PUNTSEF MAK chapter, the non teaching staff have finally agreed to pick up their tools and resume work tomorrow.
This follows a directive from The President as he met the University council and the Non Teaching staff leaders yesterday at state house. The president after looking into the issues pertaining this 17 days strike, he requested he be given 3 months to understand the consensus note and the single scribe the main issues that led to discrimination in the disbursement of salary arrears and enhancements. The consensus note seeks to balance salaries between administrative staff at Makerere and Kyambogo because apparently, the KYU staff earn more than the MAK staff a point they stressed out to be unfair.
While in this meeting, a lot of issues were raised that included the fact that Makerere salary structures are being played upon by the University Secretary and the Ministry of Public service. On record, they received a salary structure on 21st May which later turned out different from another sent on 28th May which was also later climaxed by a dictated one on 29th May.
Connected to this, the Non teaching staff pay roll scribe is inaccessible yet its public. The leaders have vowed to deal with the Secretary not only for this but also for making the house dirty. The DVC, Council chairman and the US as they consequently termed them have always benefited from the enhancements and arrears at the expense of the low cadres. The goons in big offices allegedly got 53% salary enhancements while some low cadres got 8% and less while others none.
The July salary that was supposed to indicate that the salary levels between teaching and non teaching staff had been put on the same grid shocked the staff as the 13 billion enhancement and the 28 billion arrears have up to now never been received. The 41 billion in total is what is expected in October after the 3 months suspension of the strike.
The president asked the staff to suspend the strike so they could get time to harmonize the salary distribution methods from the grass roots which seems to be the main cause of the misunderstandings as the figures keep alternating.
The staff also cautioned the University Secretary, Human Resource and The University’s spokesperson who never attend their meetings to watch out because if their august salaries are tampered with, they will have to resign as the time for unseriousness is out.
University staff that has always had their meagre salaries chopped by the US and a certain company named platinum have been advised to forward their issues so the predators can be dealt with.
The funny allegation that the Public service system failed to enhance over 300 Makerere staff has also been cleared and the staff assured that they will be incorporated in the system.
As the whole house voted in favor of the strike suspension, they cautioned the students, media and the public that by doing this, they haven’t called off the strike but given time to the government to respond.
