The John Sentamu Institute for Human Rights and Humanitarian Law at the faculty of law, Uganda Christian University (UCU) named after the Archbishop of York John Sentamu, has introduced a short course on Human Rights for the students of UCU.
The Institute partnered with the United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (UN OHCHR) to introduce the inaugural short course that will be running from the 21st August to 1st September 2017, at the University.
The UN offered scholarships to over 100 students from the faculties of law, business, education, social sciences and other courses that applied for the course. Cerificates will be awarded to the participants at the end of the training.
The Vice Chancellor Rev. Canon Dr. John Senyonyi, and Janvier Sanjuan (representing the UN Human Rights Country representative) from the OHCHR launched the course on Monday morning at Nkoyoyo Hall, before letting the session proceed for the next two weeks that it will be running.
The students will be taken through a series of topics that will help them understand the concept of Human Rights, how they affect them, and at the end of the 2 weeks have the students graduate into human rights defenders. They will also learn how the UN and other systems that protect and promote human rights on the continent work.
One key motivation for the Institute in having the short course is premised on the fact that “Human Rights Education is a right.”
The partnership will also see the Institute release its first publication, a manual on Human Rights that will be a deposited to the University library for students reading.
International experts including academicians and practitioners from UCU, Makerere University and Civil society organizations will conduct the lectures.
Sumaya Mukasa one of the students attending the training says it is exciting to know new things that she did not know about human righs. She is also thrilled at the experience she is gaining.
