Walking late night in Kikoni, Nankulabye and surrounding areas is now turning very risky especially for campus students who party all night and reside around these famous Kampala surburbs.
Murderous gangs armed with iron bars, knives and sharp dangerous materials have invaded the kikoni area hitting their victims half dead and looting their property even in the middle of the road.
With the number of laptop theft cases and property loss in and around Makerere on the rise, it is no longer safe to move out alone in the area, worse still while carrying a laptop bag or a valuable item.
The latest victim is a one, Jackson Openytho who has just joined Makerere for a course in early childhood education. Jackson was hit in the head by three gangsters armed with sharp objects and iron bars near Niccodemus pork joint in Kikoni-Nankulabye on Monday night.
“I was heading back to my hostel around 11:00pm in the night when a group of thugs hit my head with a piece of metal I cannot tell. I felt a sharp thunderous bang on my head at which I lost consciousness. I only remember waking up from a hospital bed with a drip in my hand and my head all bandaged up,” Openytho narrates.
According to night patrol police who talked to Campus Bee on condition of anonymity since they’re not allowed to talk on befalf of the force, they picked the unconscious Openytho from the scene, he was found lying in a pool of blood along the road trench.
The police picked and drove him to Mulago hospital where he regained consciousness when a nurse came to inject him. Openytho then slowly recalled a few phone numbers he had in the head and reached out to his relatives since his property, academic documents and phone had all been taken by the assailants.
Openytho has been transferred to his home in Nansana where he is currently receiving further assistance.
Campus Bee urges students to be vigilant and to avoid moving alone late in the night.
If it is a must move, move with a friend. Don’t carry your valuables at night and avoid being followed or escorted by strangers.
