The Islamic University in Uganda ( IUIU) has through its Law Society, located at its Kampala Campus, is holding a law week that will run until Friday January 14, 2022.
This undertaking commenced on Tuesday this week with the ‘Rule of Law Symposium’ under the theme, “Rule of Law and Tools of a 21st Century Lawyer’. This symposium attracted a number of students and members of the academia across the board.
The symposium was propelled by a panel discussion and the panel in perspective was composed of firstly, Rtd. Justice George Kanyeihamba, who is a retired supreme court justice, former cabinet minister, member of Parliament and was the chairman of the Legal Committee of the Constituent Assembly that made the 1995 Constitution. He was appointed a member of the Supreme Court in 1997 and retired in November 2009. Previously, he served as minister of commerce, minister of justice, Attorney General and he holds a Ph.D. in law from the University of Warwick.
The second panelist was Dr, Daniel Ruhweza, a Law Lecturer from Makerere University. The third panelist was Mr. Katulege Avrax Julius, an Advocate of the High Court. The other panelist was Solomon Nabuyanda, a law student and political activist.
This law week has also seen IUIU hold an Inter-University and Inter-class Law Oral Competition on Wednesday and will subsequently see it hold a Human Rights Day under the theme, ‘The Role Played by Citizens and Government Organisations in the Protection and Promotion of Human Rights’ on Thursday and ultimately, an Intra-University/ Intra-class Moot Court Competition on Friday.
