Being one of the best private universities in the country, Uganda Christian University finds all means of staying in its position of providing academic excellence and finds itself with no other option other than increasing tuition fees due to the high taxes incurred to it by the Uganda Revenue Authority.
This even made the outgoing Vice Chancellor Rev. Canon Dr. John Senyonyi plead to the government to intervene in the matter. On Saturday 22nd February, HE Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, the president of the republic of Uganda on the University’s fundraising ceremony came out to condemn the act and said he never knew that the institution is taxed by URA.
“It’s not a good idea for private universities to be paying taxes. Let that money be used to develop the science laboratories,” the President said.
It was also noted that just of recent, the National Council For Higher Education (NCHE) indirectly forced private universities to increase their tuition fees dues to the high taxes but this ended up affecting the students leading to dropouts and some others spending more years than they have to in universities due to dead years.
The guild president of the institution, Mr. Timothy Kadaga Kivunike also added that high taxes imposed on the University affect the students and therefore urged the president to exempt private universities from paying taxes and is the main reason as to why he came up with the idea of the annual UCU run to help those with tuition issues.
President Museveni contributed Shs 80million towards the needy students during the 1st UCU Annual Run 2020 and gave in cash of Shs 30 million. In remembrance of his visit, he planted a tree to honor the Run. The run was also attended by the Speaker of Parliament Rebecca Kadaga.
