Over 1300 students who graduated in the academic 2018/2019 are as agreed, going to start paying back the loans that were offered to them by the government of Uganda to attain higher learning at University.
In an interview with Campus Bee, the Executive Director of the Higher Education Students’ Financing Board (HESFB), Micheal Wanyama said that the grace period for these students which was one year has ended.
He further adds that the Board is in plan of developing a system that will keep track of the different financed students and their due dates which help address the issue faster than the manual system currently being used.
According to one of the beneficiaries that we talked to however, said he is not able to pay because he still unemployed and he has no where to get the money to pay back the loan.
Mr. Wanyama says the Board is aware of such short comings and can only be acceptable through a process of verification which includes visiting the affected student and physically evaluating his condition.
The students’ loan scheme kicked off the initiative of offering loans to needy students in 2014 and various university students have benefited from among which ISBERT University, Uganda.
