The following stories are of two cancer survivors that shared their encounters with the disease at the International University of East Africa (IUEA) Wonderworld Auditorium during the cancer awareness event last weekend.
The first from Mabel, a mother of 4 children, who had 4 different cancers inside of her. She told of how she planned to travel abroad, and among the routine requirements before setting off was securing health check documents. The doctor performing a body scan noticed something in her chest. A later scan revealed a tumor in one of her lungs. Subsequent scans revealed lumps in her lower spine and another in her kidney.
Mary, a recent graduate of IUEA had a rather different story. She went to take a shower and noticed a swelling on her breast. A scan was conducted and the doctor found a tumor.
Both victims thought hope was lost for them, and death was inevitable. They persistently took their medication and placed hope in the Lord. Luckily, the cancers in their bodies were discovered at an earlier stage. They have since then been survivors with a story to tell.
These stories among other presentations were told at the event hosted by the current Miss IUEA, Alice Barlow, also Youth Ambassador of the Nkesiga Cancer Foundation. The event themed “Together Against Cancer” happened on Saturday between the hours of 5 and 8:40 PM.
The students were entertained by music presentations from the host among her friends in a song about a 3-year-old boy that succumbed to cancer a few days ago. There were dances from AmFuture, a dance group, the host and her siblings, and poetry from Milton (Mr. IUEA) among others.
One student remembers the main causes of cancer as told by one of the speakers TOE PAD for Tobacco, Obesity, Environmental factors, Physical exercise, Alcohol and Diet.
“It only takes one light to catch fire in a whole forest. Let us all be that one light to spread the word about cancer, or to do something to cause an influence,” one of the speakers said at the event.
Rev. Canon Diana Nkesiga, the Guest of Honour summed up the event “Together is the only way to beat cancer.”
The Nkesiga Cancer Foundation gave out gift hampers at the end of the event, including raffle tickets.
