The Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU) has admitted over 2500 new students. The students pledged allegiance to the university in Summayyah Hall at IUIU Main Campus, Mbale City.
Speaking during the admission and swearing in ceremony, the Rector Professor Ismail Simbwa Gyagenda congratulated the students upon joining IUIU, the second oldest University in the country. Professor Gyagenda assured the students that IUIU is ready to turn them into productive citizens.
“First of all, let me congratulate you for joining the Islamic University in Uganda. Thank you for joining the second oldest university in the country. This university is ready to nurture you into responsible and productive citizens. Our academic and non- academic staff are ready to equip you with skills that will help you add value in your respective communities,” the Rector said.
Professor Gyagenda urged the students to work hard in their studies. He advised the students to follow all the rules and regulations of the institution to enjoy their academic journey at the Islamic University in Uganda.
“Education without discipline is destructive. IUIU trains students to be moral and competent academically. You need to follow all the rules and regulations to make your academic journey fruitful here. You need to avoid malpractices such as cheating in examinations. IUIU will not allow you to cheat in examinations and become an incompetent professionals,” the Rector explained.
Professor advised the students to avoid premarital relationships saying they need to put all their efforts on studies so as to pass with flying colours.
The Islamic University in Uganda was opened in 1988 by the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) under a bilateral agreement between the Government of Uganda (GOU) and the OIC.
In 1990, the Parliament of Uganda enacted a law, The Islamic University in Uganda Act (cap 131, Laws of Uganda), formally establishing the University in Uganda. The University operates under the framework of this Act.
The University opened on 10th February 1988 with 80 students and two degree programmes. Currently, it offers 72 programmes in 7 Faculties and has a student population of 8,638 coming from 21 different countries.
