The alumni of the Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU) under their umbrella body called IUIU Alumni Association (IUIU-AA) have launched a scholarship program aimed at supporting needy students at the institution.
The initiative was launched over the weekend during a 3rd IUIU Alumni Dinner held at Hotel Africana in Uganda’s Capital, Kampala.
Speaking during the event, IUIU alumnus Hajjat Aisha Nambooze said the first two beneficiaries of the scholarship program have already been identified.
“Among others , the scholarship fund is aimed at helping needy students to realize their academic dreams. The funds will help to support the financially challenged students to get quality education,” said Hajjat Aisha Nambooze who is the headteacher of Lukman Primary School.
The Interim Chairman of IUIU Alumni Association Mr AbdulNur Sekindi said the scholarship program is one of the programs lined up to support the university.
Mr Sekindi who is a professional officer in the Organisation of Islamic Organisation (OIC) in Jeddah , Kingdom of Saudi Arabia said the IUIU Alumni association is here to stay.
“The scholarship program is one of the programs lined up to support our University. We are who we are today because of the Islamic University in Uganda and we need to give back to the university. Through the association, we have lined up several programs to benefit the university,” Sekindi said.
In his remarks, Chairman University Council IUIU , His Excellency Faizo Al-Zanel hailed the university for providing quality education. The chairman urged the university to continue changing communities through quality education it provides.
The guest of honor at the Dinner was also an alumnus of IUIU , Right Honorable Rukia Nakadaama who is the current Third Deputy Prime Minister of Uganda.
The dinner that was held under the theme “Re-imagining and Re-thinking the Role of the Alumni Associations in University Transformation,” brought together hundreds alumni of IUIU. IUIU Alumni Association is an umbrella body that seeks to bring together all former students of the Islamic University in Uganda.
IUIU was established on 10th February, 1988 by the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation in collaboration with Government of Uganda to provide quality education to English speaking countries in Sub-Saharan Africa. In 1990 , the Parliament of Uganda enacted the Islamic University in Uganda Act formally establishing the university in Uganda.
