The Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU) finally has three solar powered boreholes at its Main Campus in Mbale City to alleviate water challenges.
The boreholes that will supply water to the students’ halls of residence were commissioned on Friday, 12th March, 2021.
Speaking during the Commissioning Function the Assistant Secretary of the University Mr Rashid Kinsambwe said they asked the organisation
called Islamic Centre for Education and Research (ICFER) to drill the boreholes anticipating that the water scarcity will be history.
Kinsambwe said the university asked the national water supplying company in the country to allow them have the boreholes after some years of discussions.
The IUIU Assistant Secretary commended the national water supplying company for allowing them to drill the boreholes.
In his remarks, the Guild President of Islamic University Students’ Union (IUSU) Government 2020-2021 His Excellency Welunga Yusuf commended the university for the project.
His Excellency Welunga says the boreholes have come timely since students have been complaining of water scarcity.
“I thank Honorable Lapolo Rechel (State Minister of Campus Affairs ) for writing to the University Coordinator raising the concern of scarcity of water in the University,”
“Finally, three bore holes have been drilled to provide a remedy (one in- between Education Block and Kaswampa Hostels, near New Library and around Staff Quarters,” Welunga said.
The solar powered boreholes will be pumping water into the tanks and then supplying to the students’ halls of residence.
