The Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU) has cancelled the Mature Entry Certificate of Kitagwenda District National Resistance Movement (NRM) Member of Parliament flag bearer, Robert Mugabe, after finding that the documents he used to qualify for the May 2021 Mature Entry Aptitude Test were fraudulently obtained.
In a letter dated January 2, 2026, issued by the Office of the Academic Registrar, the university informed Mugabe that Certificate No. IUKC-ME021MAY-139 had been recalled and cancelled with immediate effect. The decision followed investigations which established that the documents he presented to qualify for the Mature Age Entry Scheme were not genuine.
According to the letter, the matter was reviewed by the IUIU Executive Board during its 382nd meeting held on December 31, 2025. Mugabe attended the meeting together with his legal representative. The board resolved to cancel the certificate in accordance with Section 7.4(iii) of the General University Examination Regulations (2023).
“The University established that the document(s) you presented to qualify to sit for the Mature Age Entry Aptitude Test of May 2021 were obtained fraudulently,” the letter states.
As a result of the cancellation, all rights, privileges, and academic benefits arising from the certificate have been withdrawn. Mugabe has also been directed to return the original certificate to the Office of the Academic Registrar within 14 days from the date of receipt of the letter. The university warned that failure to comply could result in further administrative or legal action.
The development comes at a critical moment as Uganda counts down to just 12 days to polling day, raising questions about the implications for Mugabe’s candidature and eligibility in the Kitagwenda District parliamentary race.
By the time of publication, Mugabe had not issued a public statement in response to the university’s decision, and it remains unclear how the matter may affect his standing with the Electoral Commission and the NRM party leadership.
