The 2020 Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU) – Main campus Electoral Chairperson says police officers were right to fire bullets in the space after announcing the guild elections polls on Saturday.
Some students claim the police took a wrong decision because they were not causing harm to anyone but expressing happiness after winning of their candidate.
But speaking in an interview with Campus Bee, the EC Chairman Gava Kasango supports the police action on the elections day.
“The students were over jubilating and the only way to calm the situation was to fire bullets in the space. The safety of the Guild President elect, Yusuf Welunga was also paramount and firing bullets also made students who surrounded him to be dispersed,” he said.
On the credibility of the elections, Kasango says no candidate complained after the announcement of the results meaning that the electoral process was free and fair.
“The EC commissioners were professional except the Chief Commissioner who was fired few days to the polls day. The Chief Commissioner was campaigning for one candidate which is against the acts of the commission. He was later replaced by another person who discharged duties professionally, “he says.
On claims that the Guild President elect is a people power member, Kasango says, IUIU politics can’t allow any candidate to do politics on any political party card.
“It is not true. Yusuf Welunga didn’t win using any political party because students at IUIU are not allowed to do politics in a partisan way,” he says.
The elections saw Yusuf Welunga and Fatumah Nakibuule elected the 2020/2021 Islamic University Students Union Guild President and Lady Vice Guild President respectively.
