The Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU) females campus based in Kabojja is currently in hot soup for allowing singer Rema Namakula to enter the university without rocking proper Islamic attire.
The singer, who was at the university yesterday to take part in a blood donation drive has received major backlash for showing up at the Islam-founded university in tight pants and nothing to cover up her hair.
In an open letter penned down by a one Lydia Etii Ajwang (student) to the Director of IUIU female campus Ms. Nabukeera Madina Sebyala, Ajwang wonders whether the university rules have been scrapped off without officially informing the students and other stake holders.
According to Ajwang, Hon.Namirembe Bitamazire was once denied from entering the campus premises without rocking proper Islamic wear as well as officials from the National Council for Higher Education (NCHE).
“There are photographs making rounds on social media of a one celebrity and officials from Nakasero Blood Bank who happened to enter our prestigious only females campus with tight trousers and not veiled. I don’t know if the rules and regulations governing our university have changed or we were just not updated.” Ajwang’s letter reads in part.
“I remember when Hon.Namirembe Bitamazire was denied from entering the campus premises not until one student took for her Islamic wear and she entered. Officials from Uganda National Council of Higher Education were also refused from entering until they were fully dressed, the same happened to members of Uganda Law Society,Equity Bank, Foundation for Human Rights Initiative amongst others.” The letter reads further.
It should be recalled that two years ago, the same university was on the spot for suspending and expelling some students. Human Rights activists later came in but the university community ruled that these students signed the rules and regulations and promised to abide by them. The rules in question also state that no visitor is allowed in without being properly dressed in Islamic wear.
Ajwang also wondered whether the university top officials were star struck by singer Rema Namakula or the Kaboja campus has finally bowed down to society pressure.
“Maybe the authorities were star struck by Leemah but then it is hard to believe so because even prominent persons have been told to dress up before entering. Unless we have finally bowed down to societal pressure and we are no longer Islamic University In Uganda but Secular University in Uganda and are trying to show that our rules and code of conduct no longer works. Every place has rules and it’s code of conduct and whoever wishes” Ajwang wrote.
