In a fiercely contested election held on Monday, 8th May, Mr Kakaire Umar emerged triumphant as the newly declared president of the Islamic University Law Students’ Society, leaving his sole opponent, Mr Martin Musasizi, trailing behind.
The tightly protected election, overseen by the society’s Electoral Commission Chairperson, Mr Mugabi John Bosco, witnessed Kakaire securing an impressive 233 votes, while Musasizi garnered 207 votes.
Following the declaration of the results, an explosion of joy engulfed the university campus as jubilant students hoisted Kakaire onto their shoulders. Overwhelmed with happiness, Kakaire expressed his elation and gratitude to the voters when asked about his emotions. He described his victory as a thrilling experience and extended heartfelt thanks to those who supported him.
In a magnanimous display of sportsmanship, the soft-spoken and humble Musasizi gracefully accepted defeat. He consoled his supporters through a heartfelt message shared on his main campaign WhatsApp group, acknowledging the unfortunate failure to achieve their primary goal. Musasizi, however, highlighted the indomitable spirit they exhibited throughout the campaign, which would be etched in the annals of the faculty’s history. He concluded by expressing his profound gratitude to his supporters.
The opinions of supporters and campaign agents shed light on the reasons behind their loyalty. Ms Nambuya Rachael Druscilla, a fourth-year law student and staunch supporter of Kakaire, cited his down-to-earth nature, charisma, and industriousness as the driving factors for her unwavering support.
Nambuya revealed that Kakaire personally approached her, appealing for her vote, and emphasized his social and approachable demeanour. On the other hand, Ms Mayeku Martha, a third-year law student and ardent supporter of Musasizi, attributed her backing to his proven capabilities, having previously served as the society’s Secretary General.
Ms Hamida Nagadya, the acting dean of the Faculty of Law, congratulated Kakaire on his victory and swiftly extended her consolation to the defeated candidate. Nagadya assured Musasizi that numerous opportunities awaited him within the university, encouraging him to persevere in his future endeavors.
Both Kakaire and Musasizi are third-year students pursuing Bachelor of Law degrees at the Islamic University in Uganda.
Kakaire now faces the daunting task of fostering unity within the society following a closely contested election, where he clinched victory with a margin of just 24 votes. It remains to be seen whether he will consider appointing some of the defeated candidates to assist in this endeavor.
Among the other candidates who vied for various posts in the election, Lemi Frank Bosco emerged victorious as the General Secretary, commanding a notable 341 votes against Kasolo Esther Trina’s 105 votes. Asiimwe Macklin secured the position of Deputy Speaker with 253 votes, outshining Kanyange Edrene Winfred, who garnered a mere 184 votes.
In a less competitive landscape, Uwere Hilda claimed the post of Lady Vice President, Onyango Zacharia secured the position of Speaker, and Tusiime Pauline assumed the role of Auditor, as all three ran unopposed during the election.
With the vibrant election season culminating in these results, the Islamic University Law Students’ Society awaits the transformative leadership of Kakaire Umar and the collective efforts of the elected candidates to shape the future of their institution.
