A lecturer at Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU), Sheikh Mustafa Bahiga was last night shot dead along Entebbe Road by unknown gun men.
According to the Kampala District Emir (Muslim Chief), Sheikh Ibrahim Hassan Kirya who also doubles as the spokesman of Kibuli Mosque, Bahiga was killed on his way to Bwebajja mosque.
The slain victim had just delivered had delivered a lecture and then headed to Najjanankumbi, where he performed the Magharib prayer. He then headed to Bwebajja to perform the Isha prayer and it is here that he met his assailants.
Kirya says unidentified people appeared and then shot him four times as he left his car on the way to the
mosque. He adds that locals rushed him to a nearby clinic to rescue him, but the clinic staff said they could not
handle his case.
They then headed to Kibuli Muslim Hospital, but Bahiga died on the way to the hospital. Bahiga is the second Muslim cleric to be killed in less than five days. On Christmas day, the leader of the Shia Muslim Community in Uganda,
Sheikh Dactoor Abdu Kadir Muwaya, was killed by unknown assailants in Mayuge District, Eastern Uganda. Muwaya was shot dead at his home.
The attackers fled the scene on a motorcycle after carrying out their crime, according to local media. Muwaya was the director of the Mayuge-based Ahlul Bait Islamic Foundation, which established several mosques across Uganda and sponsored the education of needy children.
