Public Interest Law Clinic (PILAC) at the School of Law, Makerere University together with the Network of Public Interest Lawyers (NETPIL) partnered with Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU) , Faculty of Law and established a legal clinic named IUIU – Mbale NETPIL Chapter.
Ronald Dennis Bukombo, Public Relations Officer of the Chapter told Campus Bee the clinic is important to the law students and the community.
“The chapter’s aims are promoting human rights, fostering access to justice, and gender equality in addition to promoting clinical legal education,” he says.
According to Bukomba, the Chapter has already organised a community outreach to one of the areas in Mbale Municipality this month.
“The IUIU Chapter has already organised a community outreach in areas of Doko village, Namatale Ward , Mbale Sub County, Mbale District where it intends to offer legal assistance to the community members in mid March, 2020,” he says.
NETPIL was officially launched in May 2015 with the aim of promoting public interest lawyering and the pro bono spirit in Uganda.
Spearheaded by the PILAC at Makerere University, School of Law, the network is geared to foster greater engagement of lawyers in public interest litigation and advocacy towards achieving social justice and greater protection of fundamental rights of all.
