The new University Secretary of the Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU), Counsel Sewankambo Hamza says he is determined to take the research further at the institution.
Sewankambo says during his term in office, he will make sure that the university is conducting research intensively to benefit the country.
“The university cannot exist without research. The secretariat during my time in office will facilitate research in various fields such as humanities, social sciences, and sciences among others. I will focus on giving a strategic direction to see that research is improved,” Sewankambo says.
The new University Secretary who took office on 15th November 2021, commits to working hard to expose the brand of the university outside the university.
“The secretariat also needs to link up with the population including the media. As the secretariat, we are supposed to conduct community outreach to ensure that there is a lot of publicity about the institution on what we offer in terms of education and corporate social responsibilities that we do,” Counsel Sewankambo says.
Sewankambo who was once the State Attorney in the Directorate of the Public Prosecution, a Law Lecturer at IUIU Kampala Campus, and the owner of a law firm called Sewankambo and Co Advocates suggested establishing the IUIU Legal Clinic to help people access legal services.
“For instance, the Faculty of Law (FOL) can establish a legal clinic in Mbale for the purposes of assisting those in Mbale and surrounding areas access legal services,” says New University Secretary who also partly taught in the Faculty of Law at IUIU Main Campus in Mbale City.
Counsel Sewankambo who has been an advocate of the High Court of Uganda and the courts subordinate thereto since 2005 says will table his ideas to respective committees of the university to be operationalized.
“I will develop concept papers which I will put to respective committees to discuss them extensively and then come out with the tools that can ensure that these ideas are accepted. I know that I have brilliant ideas and they can be accepted,” he added.
Counsel Sewankambo says the secretariat is determined to work hand in hand with other administrators to address challenges such as delayed renewal of contracts and long meetings.
“In administration, it is not a one-man show. It needs a lot of cooperation to identify why the challenges you are talking about such as delays in renewal of contracts are coming up. Because it could be a gap that requires a policy kind of direction to be solved. I am determined to work hand in hand with other administrators to rectify such challenges,” he says.
The new secretary of IUIU holds a Bachelor of Laws (LLB), a Master of Laws (LLM) from Makerere University. He is currently pursuing a Ph.D. at the same university.
Counsel Sewankambo is currently writing a book on Criminal Law that is expected to be published soon.
