The Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU) through its Faculty of Health Sciences is planning to sensitize people in Mbale Municipality about the deadly Coronavirus (COVID- 19).
Speaking in an interview with Campus Bee , Aisha Nansamba , a lecturer of Pharmacology and Principles of Nursing at IUIU says the sensitization campaign will help the people to know how to prevent.
“As you know that the disease is now in Kenya and Mbale boarders Kenya so we need to inform people how they can prevent the disease,” she says.
She says the Mbale residents will be reached to teach the preventive measures so that they can also teach others.
“We have begun sensitizing the IUIU community. We have put buckets and soap in some areas on the campus to allow students, staff and all the people visiting IUIU to wash hands. Hygiene is the number one preventive measure of COVID- 19,”
“During the campaign, we shall also be telling people to wash their hands with soap, avoiding contact with anyone with a cold or flue like symptoms and covering the mouth when sneezing among other measures,” she says.
COVID-19 has killed many people in China and many countries around the world. In Africa the disease has also hit many countries including South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia and Somalia among others.
In East Africa, Kenya and Tanzania have reported the first cases of COVID- 19. According to health experts, the current coronavirus is special because it has mutated Ribonucleic Acid (RNA).
COVID-19 or Novel Corona Virus is a strain from this Coronavirus family. This new virus according to health experts has mutated RNA that is making it unique from the other viruses in from the same family.
COVID- 19 is caused by the Coronavirus known as SARS-CoV-2. After the virus has entered the body it attacks the respiratory organs such as the lungs.
