The Rector of the Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU) Professor Ismail Simbwa Gyagenda has urged players of IUIU Football Team to balance between football and academics.
Professor Gyagenda made the remarks over the weekend during a dinner organized to congratulate the team for winning Mbale Super 8 football league last month.
Professor Gyagenda told the players not to only focus on football. “I like football and I have played with some of you when I was the Vice Rector Academic Affairs. Imagine if I was only focusing on football, I would not become the Rector. You need to combine football with your studies. As you are winning trophies, you must also make sure that your GPA is okay. You came here for studies and your Degree is most important” Professor Gyagenda said.
The Rector also challenged the team to combine skills and discipline to be successful in football. He advised the team to be united to be number one in Uganda.
“You need to be disciplined on the football pitch. Don’t confront a match official such as a referee. I need IUIU team to be disciplined. Just focus on understanding your opponent and score goals. Unity in football is a key to winning more trophies. I want IUIU Football Team to be number one in Uganda,” Professor Gyagenda said.
In his remarks, the team’s head coach Harunah Kebba pledged to win more trophies.
IUIU Football Team defeated Kataha Football club with 2 goals to 0 to become the Champions at Mbale Stadium. Mbale Super 8 Football League involves top 8 football teams in Mbale City.
