The students of Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU) – Main campus through the Islamic University Students Union (IUSU) Government say they are not comfortable with the directive made by the administration that they shall sit for exams on 27th April, 2020, one week after reporting back from the impromptu holiday if Government orders so.
According to a statement signed by IUSU Government Guild President Welunga Yusuf, some students at the institution have no smartphones to cope up with the online learning method that will make them not prepare well for exams in a period of seven days.
“Some students have no access to internet and others lack smart phones to comply with the online learning as decided by the university executive board,”
“Some students have divergent programs as they go back home which limits the effectiveness of the online learning,”reads a statement.
A statement adds that some students have practical papers that are understood while in class such as mathematics, chemistry, biology, introductory Arabic, Physics among others that will need them to have enough time to be ready for exams.
A statement also says the one week period to exams set by the administration will not favour international students.
“Some international students left the country and immediately as they will come back, they are to be quarantined for a period of fourteen (14) days (2 weeks) thus if exams are to be sat in the one week’s time as proposed by the university executive board, they will miss them,”
According to a statement, the economy in the world is unstable making parents struggle to find money for tuition hence asking the university administration to revise its directive on the space between reporting at the campus and writing exams.
“Given the general impact on the economy, parents’ earnings have been affected adversely and what shall students do as far as the university’s zero balance policy is concerned in a period of one week as resolved by the university executive board,”
“Following the above views that were emerging from the students, the guild officials are requesting for
a one month extension for the students to prepare before sitting for their exams,” reads a statement.
The statement has further asked the administration to allow students who shall pay at least 70 percent of tuition sit for their examinations.
